Copshaw Common ridingNewcastleton & District Community Trust is a membership organisation,  formally established on September 16th 2015.  It is registered in Scotland. Co Ltd by Guarantee no SC515720. Scottish Charity no. SC045988

The charitable objects of Newcastleton & District Community Trust are:

  • The advancement community development through regeneration of the community by the maintenance or improvement of the physical, social and economic infrastructure, and by assisting people who are disadvantaged because of their social and economic circumstance, and by being a community focal point, providing leadership within the community through self-help activities and initiatives combating social problems.
  • The advancement of education and provision of recreational facilities and activities through the facilitation and organisation of various activities within the community.

The current Board of Directors/charity trustees are:

Steve Hartley, Chair  lives in the Upper Liddesdale valley above Newcastleton.  A previous member of the Newcastleton & District Community Council, Steve is currently Treasurer for the new Upper Liddesdale & Hermitage Community Council as well as Chair of the Newcastleton & District Community Trust.

Barbara Elborn, Secretary lives on the outskirts of Newcastleton village.  Her present roles include membership of the Newcastleton Business Forum, membership of Newcastleton & District Community Council. Barbara is secretary of the Newcastleton & District Community Trust.

Margaret Eliott of Redheugh 29th Chief of Clan Elliot. Deputy Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale.   Trustee of Boswell Trust, Sir Arthur Eliott Memorial Trust, Roxburghshire Landward  Trust. Newcastleton & District Community Councillor. Vice President, Liddesdale Agricultural Society.  Member of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs.

Betty Wilson lives and worked in the village all her life, married to George.  She has been an active member of many community groups; the Copshaw Gardeners, LLAGS, and many others over the years. Currently Betty is a long serving Trustee of the Club Community Trust which manages Buccleuch House on behalf of the community and now also a director of the Newcastleton & District Community Trust with responsibility for Buccleuch House.

Scott Wilson lives in Copshaw Holm, the common name for Newcastleton village and is passionate about ‘the Holm’, having lived here all his life.  Scott is currently chair of Newcastleton & District Community Council and a director of Newcastleton & District Community Trust.

Robert Leishman  runs Border Autos located in the heart of the village and loves nothing better than tinkering under bonnets!   His experience of running the garage with first-hand knowledge of the health and safety disciplines needed to manage a fuel site will be invaluable in helping establish the community fuel pumps.

Sarah Laing lives in the Hermitage valley with her family where they have farmed since 1947.  She is secretary of the Upper Liddesdale and Hermitage Community Council and helps fund raise for local organisations.

Jo Elliot, married to Stuart with twin boys. For the past 18 years Jo has operated a mobile hair dressing business as well as crafting; trained and skilled at pottery, textile and card making, she is an avid up-cycler and crafter, her passion is vintage!  Jo is a member of Newcastleton School Partnership which includes fundraising, coffee mornings, events and a helper at the village primary school.  She also sits on the Polysport (village sports facility) management committee.

The Honourable Toby Tennant of Shaws Farm. Passionate about the local environment and the wider community.  Toby is Chair of Upper Liddesdale & Hermitage Community Council.
